LIGHTING DESIGN

QDS are able to offer a complete internal and external lighting design service. All lighting designs can have 3D simulated models giving the end user a valuable insight into how their scheme will look...

Overview

Our motivation is to exceed our clients’ expectations by providing innovative building services engineering.

Conceptual Design

Sustainable strategies must result in more energy efficient and sustainable buildings so QDS need to be involved at the conception stage in order to optimise the energy performance of the building. Basic principles such as layout, form, fenestration and orientation are critical in optimising energy performance and subsequent CO2 output. Low energy and sustainable strategies will be a critical factor in decisions that define the entire design process. Cooperation between client, architect, services engineer, structural engineer and cost management is paramount.

Building energy modelling and performance analysis provides high quality information for the design team, enabling informed decisions to be made to create a sustainable solution. As the model is developed in parallel with the design, from comparative analysis through to detailed analysis, highly accurate figures are calculated which enable correct system sizing, full compliance, accurate costing and full documentation to be produced.

BREEAM

BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance. BREEAM provides clients, developers, designers and others with:

  • market recognition for low environmental impact buildings
  • assurance that best environmental practice is incorporated into a building
  • inspiration to find innovative solutions that minimise the environmental impact
  • a benchmark that is higher than regulation
  • a tool to help reduce running costs, improve working and living environments
  • a standard that demonstrates progress towards corporate and organisational environmental objectives

BREEAM addresses wide-ranging environmental and sustainability issues and enables developers and designers to prove the environmental credentials of their buildings to planners and clients. It:

  • uses a straightforward scoring system that is transparent, easy to understand and supported by evidence-based research
  • has a positive influence on the design, construction and management of buildings
  • sets and maintains a robust technical standard with rigorous quality assurance and certification

We employ BREEAM accredited professionals and can guide clients through certification management.

Sustainable Technologies

The transition to a low carbon economy demands the use of these technologies. Technologies offer the means of radically improving resource productivity and reducing the environmental harm of economic activity, but the development and use of sustainable technologies will depend on the attitudes, incentives and capabilities of people and organisations.

As energy engineers, we are obligated to meet targets set out by government protocols. Local planning policy dictates a percentage reduction in site CO2 output via renewable technologies as a planning condition, each project will be assessed individually via a renewables feasibility report as required by BREEAM.

QDS utilise the IES <Virtual Environment> suite of software for Building Regulations compliance which is accredited as approved compliance software by the Department for Communities & Local Government.

Utilising this software we ensure that both architectural and engineering elements work effectively together from concept stage onwards, with the focus on sustainability for all building elements.

To maximise the impact of building performance simulation, it must be undertaken at the earliest stage and should be developed in parallel with the design of the building. Early stage comparative analysis through dynamic simulation modelling is an outstanding and underutilised resource. Layout, form, orientation and massing are reviewed and utilising the software informed decisions can be made. The IES software suite assists us to:

• Undertake energy performance snapshots to assess the impact of design decisions
• Develop building loads and impact of conservation strategies
• Develop carbon footprint reduction strategies
• Assess passive/hybrid/renewable strategies
• Assess the impact of daylight and solar
• Incorporate bulk airflow, ventilation and indoor air quality into the equation
• Assess compliance with a range of worldwide regulations and voluntary codes

Energy Performance Certification (EPC)
Commercial Energy Performance Certificates are required on any building being sold or leased. A commercial EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) is intended to inform potential tenants or buyers about the energy performance of a building.

An energy rating for the building is provided based on the potential of the building including fabric and associated services. The rating reflects the intrinsic energy performance of the building relative to a benchmark to enable comparisons between similar properties.

A higher rated EPC is a more attractive option to a potential purchaser or tenant.
